63 years of public drinking
1920's - Construction begins on Glover's Cafeteria at the North East Corner of Victoria Street and Dundas Street. The upstairs has rooms for dental and medical offices.
1930's - Glover's Cafeteria closes medical offices and converts the second floor into nine hotel rooms to comply with new liquor laws that only allow the sale of alcohol in hotels with six rooms or more.
-Hotel is owned by several partners, including York Region's chief of police.
-"Glover's Cafeteria" is renamed "The Imperial Hotel."
1944 - Law passes banning police employees from owning bars.
- Newman Family buys the Imperial Hotel. Jack Newman, age 30, becomes manager.
1950's - Seeburg Jukeboxes installed, replacing Rock 'n Roll with jazz.
- Aquariums installed on first floor.
1960's - Hotel rooms close; city rejects numerous plans to extend pub to the second floor.
-Application finally accepted.
-The Library on the second floor opens to accommodate Ryerson Students
- The Imperial Hotel loses its hotel status and becomes a "public house." Renamed "The Imperial Pub Lic. House."
1971 - Dividing wall between the men's and women's rooms on the first floor removed after changes to Ontario's liquor laws.
1981 - Outdoor patio opens
1998 - City tries to shut down the Imperial to make way for the Development of Dundas Square.
-Patrons and community write petition and the plan is cancelled. Dundas square limited to the corner of Yonge and Dundas.
2003 - Dundas Square opens
